The Ultimate Sight Word Checklist for Teachers

Sight word checklists can be a great way to keep track of student progress and also as a self-evaluation tool. I’ve found that adding sight words to my curriculum in ESL/EFL classrooms has been a great addition. They provide clues to the context of the text, improve reading comprehension and boost self-esteem. Children can be intimidated by an entire paragraph of text in front of them. When they are able to visually identify many of the words on the page, they immediately feel more capable, at ease and less intimidated. This sets the stage for confidence in reading, speaking and listening skills.

If your students are familiar with the sight words, they often can decode the meaning of the paragraph or sentence by reading the sight words. If you include SIGHT WORDS in your curriculum, grab these FREE checklists to keep track of which words your students can and can’t read.  Check your inbox for the Pre-Primer and Primer Checklists. You’ll receive:

  • Pre-Primer Checklist (Dolch aligned 40 words)
  • Primer Checklist (Dolch aligned 52 words)

You  might also be interested in adding some games and activities to help teach sight words. Here are a few of my favorites: SIGHT WORD UNO GAMES

Sight word card games work amazingly well because students will do anything to win (including learning to read words they’ve previously had trouble with. It also takes the pressure off because classmates are always willing to help out with pronunciation.
