ESL Vocabulary Board Game Freebie + Editable Bookmarks for Any List

Busy teacher? Same. That’s why I designed two flexible, low-prep resources you can plug into any curriculum: a free snakes and ladders–style vocabulary board game and editable vocabulary bookmarks. Both accept your own word lists, so they work for every grade level, subject, and skill set—from phonics and sight words to academic vocabulary, content-area terms, idioms, and test-prep.

How to play—editable snakes-and-ladders vocabulary board game with numbered squares, snakes, ladders, and task key.

Why teachers love “editable everything” for vocabulary

  • Curriculum keeps changing. New units? New novel? Swap the list in seconds.
  • Mixed ability groups. Differentiate by giving each group a list at the right level (A1–B2, Tier 2 words, content terms).
  • Limited prep time. Type or paste your list once—use it all year in centers, small groups, or fast-finishers.
  • Engagement + accountability. Games and personal bookmarks make practice hands-on and trackable.

Free Snakes & Ladders–Style Vocabulary Game

This classroom favorite turns any list into a high-engagement review. Students roll, move, and complete quick tasks to say, spell, define, draw, use in a sentence, or act out the word they land on—great for speaking, listening, spelling, and vocabulary practice in ESL/EFL and ELA classrooms.

How to use it (2-minute setup)

  1. Choose a list. Sight words, phonics patterns, roots & affixes, science terms, literature vocabulary—anything.
  2. Print the board. One per pair or small group; add dice and counters.
  3. Play + practice. When a player lands on a square, they complete the matching task with a word from your list.

Why it works

  • High talk time: Students explain, spell, and use words out loud.
  • Multiple exposures: The task key builds spaced repetition without feeling repetitive.
  • Built-in differentiation: Assign different lists to different groups in the same block.

Editable Vocabulary Bookmarks

Give every learner a portable study tool. These editable vocabulary bookmarks let you paste your list and instantly print class sets. Students record definitions, synonyms, example sentences, parts of speech, and translation (optional), then tuck the bookmark into their independent reading book or notebook for daily review.

Editable wordlist bookmarks printable—type your own vocabulary; colorful monthly bookmarks for students.

Classroom ideas

  • Independent reading: Track new words from novels and content texts.
  • Spiral review: Keep a running list of priority Tier 2 words all quarter.
  • Word study: Use separate bookmarks for prefixes/suffixes and roots.
  • Home connection: Send a bookmark home for quick family practice.

A year-round plan for vocabulary growth

  • Fall: Focus on routines—bookmark note-taking + weekly board-game center.
  • Winter: Add morphology (prefixes, suffixes, roots) to boost decoding and meaning.
  • Spring: Shift to academic vocabulary and content-area terms for testing and projects.
  • All year: Revisit “keeper words” using the game + bookmarks for spaced repetition.

Management & differentiation tips

  • Group by list: Color-code cards so each group plays with the right level.
  • Timebox play: 10–15 minutes per round; rotate lists weekly.
  • Accountability: Require a quick sentence or sketch on mini whiteboards before moving.
  • ELL supports: Provide sentence frames and allow L1 translation on bookmarks for newcomers.
  • Challenge: Add “collocation” or “morphology” squares (e.g., add a prefix, use with a strong verb).

FAQ: Teaching vocabulary with games & bookmarks

What grades are these for?

hey work from upper elementary to high school. Because both tools are editable, you simply match the list to your learners (phonics → test prep terms—your choice).

How many players?

The board game runs best in pairs or groups of 3–4. Print multiple boards for a full-class rotation.

Will this work in ESL/EFL mixed-level classes?

Yes. Assign different lists to different tables; provide sentence frames on the table tent; encourage peer modeling. Bookmarks make it easy to personalize goals.

How do I assess learning?

Use a 2-minute exit ticket after centers (define two words + write one sentence). Collect bookmarks weekly to check usage and give quick feedback.

How long does it take to prep?

About 5 minutes. Paste or type your list, print, and you’re ready. Laminate bookmarks for repeated use.
